Problems to Watch for When Buying a New House | The Home Owners Listing Team

Every homeowner knows how difficult it can be to look at properties and decide which one to purchase. Inspecting the property and ensuring everything is as listed can take some time but will pay off in the long run.

You don’t want to purchase a home only to find out later there are significant repairs needed. Here are some of the biggest problems to watch for when buying a new house.

Old Roof

Roofs are the first line of defense homes have against the elements. They protect you and your assets from the elements, allowing you to live comfortably no matter what the weather is like outside. However, roofs can degrade over time, making it harder for them to keep the home protected.

First, you should find out how old the home’s roof is before buying it. Most roofs only last a decade or two, and you don’t want to have to replace them as soon as you move in. Ensure the roof has good ventilation by checking for seepages, breaks, and leaks. Standing water or mold are signs the roof hasn’t received the care it needs.

Gas Leaks

Another common problem home buyers may encounter during their search is gas leaking. While natural gas is convenient, it can pose a significant threat if not monitored. Homes that use natural gas lines should have carbon monoxide detectors throughout.

Other common gases you should be aware of include propane and formaldehyde. Homes should receive testing to ensure there are safe radon levels beneath the soil. Learning how radon gas exposure affects your health is essential for keeping occupants safe.

Plumbing Issues

You should also check any home you’re considering buying for plumbing issues. Inspect everything from dripping faucets to leaky pipes to ensure you know what you’re getting into. Problems like constantly running toilets and clogged drains can be nightmares if not dealt with before moving in.

You may be able to resolve some plumbing issues yourself. If you can identify where the leak is occurring, you may be able to fix the surrounding pipework without needing professional services. However, you’ll probably want to hire someone who knows what they’re doing for more complex tasks.

Ensure Your New Home Is Move-In Ready

Buying a new home can be a lot of work. You don’t want to have to deal with multiple issues immediately after you’ve moved in.

Knowing the biggest problems to watch for when buying a new house will ensure you don’t have any unexpected expenses right away.
